Waves Defeat UC Irvine 3-2 at Dodgertown Classic
March 13, 2012
LOS ANGELES- The Pepperdine baseball team took the field at historic Dodger Stadium for the Dodgertown Classic on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the UC Irvine Anteaters in close fashion 3-2.
With the game deadlocked 2-2 through the first and a half frames, the go-ahead run came in the bottom of the fifth off a sacrifice fly from shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS). In the first inning first baseman Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) had an RBI single and Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) added a sacrifice fly to score the Waves' (12-4) two other runs.
Left-handed pitcher Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./Medford HS) threw a solid 5.2 innings of work, allowing two runs on just two hits and five strikeouts en route to earning his third win of the season. Freshman righty Andrew Alvarez(Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS) came in with two on and one out in the top of the sixth in relief of Maurer and got out of the jam, throwing a total of 2.2 innings and allowing only one hit.
In the ninth freshman closer Brown came in from right field and was able to get a double play after walking the first batter, but after allowing two more free passes, Michael Swanner(Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) came in to make the final out, solidifying his first save of the season.
After the Anteaters (8-7) were able to plate a run in the top of the first, the Waves came out in the bottom half of the inning swinging. Vincej led things off with a single to right field and advanced to second on a Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) groundout. Second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) reached on an error by the centerfielder and left fielder Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) walked. With the bases loaded Meyer came through to plate the Waves first run of the day and he sent a well-hit ball down the first base line. In the next at bat Brown would drive another run in with a sacrifice fly. After the first the Waves led 2-1.
The Anteaters would get another run to cross in the top of the second to tie things up 2-2. That score would hold through the bottom of the fifth, when the Waves would score the eventual game winner.
The bottom of the fifth would start with a double over the centerfielder's head by Waves third baseman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS). Catcher James Grandpre(Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) would lay down a nice sacrifice bunt to move Davidson to third. Vincej would follow with a fly out to left field that would plate Davidson and put the Waves ahead 3-2.
The Waves defense was key today, turning four total double plays, with two of those coming in the final four innings to hold the Waves' 3-2 lead.
The team will have a quick turnaround, as they are set to host Columbia on Wednesday at 3 p.m. PT.
