MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team lost the third game of its series to No. 20 Louisville Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium, 7-0, in falling to 6-9 on the season. The Cardinals meanwhile improved to 11-3 as four of their pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout.

Mike Nastold started for Louisville and delivered 5.0 innings in which he allowed one hit, walked three and struck out two. All three of his free passes came in the second inning as the Waves ledt the bases loaded with one out.

Pepperdine would put two runners on base later in the third, sixth and seventh innings; however, none were able to get past second base. The Waves’ lone hits – all singles – came off the bats of Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS), Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./Servite HS) and Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills).

The Louisville offense smacked 13 hits, including four straight in the third inning that lead to four more runs and a 6-0 lead. Sophomore starter Alex Najera (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) was saddled with the loss after giving up those six runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batsmen.

Pepperdine’s bullpen remained impressive for the third straight game of the series even though it surrendered its first run of the weekend in the sixth. Through 12.2 innings pitched against the Cardinals, seven Waves’ relievers combined for a 0.71 earned run average with nine strikeouts and .209 opponents’ batting average.

Pepperdine returns to action Tuesday at home against Long Beach State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
