Waves Ride Complete Game from Scott Frazier in 7-1 Win Over Rhode Island
March 10, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - For the second-straight game, a Pepperdine starting pitcher has gone the distance in victory, as Scott Fraziert hrew a complete game, allowing only one run on six hits as the Waves defeated Rhode Island 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Frazier's (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) complete game win is the first of his career, following Friday's starter Jon Moscot's (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) complete game victory. Frazier tallied three strikeouts and had a perfect game going through his first 4.1 innings of work. He finished with one run earned on six hits and one walk. The last the Waves had back-to-back complete game victories was in 2010 when Matt Bywater led the Waves to a 7-1 victory over Saint Mary's on May 7 and Cole Cookcame out the next day to throw a complete game 12-0 shutout.
The Waves' (10-4) bats put together 11 hits for seven runs today, as they touched up the Rams' (4-7) starting pitcher Kevin Lee early, plating three runs in the first and two in the second. Designated hitter Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) blasted his second home run of the season and led the team with two RBI on the day. Shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS), center fielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) and third baseman Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) all were 2-of-3 on the day with one RBI.
Vincej got things started for the Waves in the bottom of the first as he drew a leadoff walk. The speedy Gelalich followed with his first career triple to drive in Vincej and put the Waves on the board. Second baseman Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) would reach and advance to second on a throwing error by the third baseman and Gelalich would come home to score. The Waves would put one more on the board, taking a 3-0 lead into the second inning.
After a one-two-three inning from Frazier, the Waves would add two in the bottom of the second, as Silverstein would start things off with a bomb to left field, his second of the season. Davidson would follow with a single and would move into scoring position on a James Grandpre(Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) groundout. Vincej would hit his fourth double of the year to drive in Davidson to put the Waves up 5-0.
The Waves would add two more in the bottom of the fifth, as right fielder Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) would leadoff the inning by getting hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. A double by first baseman Sam Meyer(Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) would move Brown to third and Silverstein would earn his second RBI of the day on a single that would score Brown. Davidson would lay down the sacrifice bunt to score Meyer for the Waves' seventh and final run of the day.
The Rams were able to get on the board in the eighth, but Frazier would close things out and the Waves would take the second game of the series, 7-1.
The series rubber match is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT on Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
