LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team used a five-run sixth inning to break open a 3-2 ballgame against USC Saturday afternoon, winning 10-4 at Dedeaux Field.

The Waves scored their 10 runs on 14 hits, getting RBI from six different players. The Trojans put up three runs in the opening inning and then didn’t score again until the ninth.

“We could see the offensive competitiveness from this team since day one,” said head coach Steve Rodriguez, whose team has put up 18 runs in wins over No. 13 UCLA and USC in the last two days. “From the young guys to the old guys, it has been a pretty impressive effort so far. I’ve told them from the start that one inning can change a game and they did a good job today not letting one inning get them down.”

Trailing 3-2 heading into the sixth, Pepperdine broke the game open with five runs on six hits in the frame. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) singled in the first run of the inning with Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) also scoring on an error on the play, and Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) followed with a base-hit, chasing USC starter Wyatt Strahan in the process. The Waves greeted the USC reliever with three straight RBI singles to take a 7-3 lead.

The Pepperdine bats kept it going with three more runs on three hits in the seventh to go up 10-3. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) plated two runs with a single down the third base line, giving him a career-high four RBI on the day. Langlois also drove in a run with a single in the inning.

“I was seeing pitches pretty well today and was able to jump on balls up in the zone and get some hits,” said Anderson, who went 3-for-4 at the plate. “Our team always feels like we can come back and get the big inning that we need in any game. We’ve done a good job getting multiple hits in a row this year and today was a great example of that.”

Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS), who relieved starter Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) with the Trojans leading 3-2, tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win. The senior lefty struck out two batters and allowed a pair of hits to move to 1-1 on the year.

Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) also went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in a run, and Davidson and Langlois each recorded a pair of hits and one RBI. Langlois scored three times and Davidson scored twice in the game.

USC’s Kevin Swick went 3-for-4 at the plate and both Blakess Lacey and Blake Hernandez were 2-for-4.

The win improves the Waves’ record to 11-3 on the season and drops USC to 8-5. Pepperdine closes the weekend with a home game against Houston at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
