Waves Drop Rubber Match at No. 10 Oklahoma 8-1
March 3, 2013
NORMAN, Okla. – Pepperdine scored first, but No. 10 Oklahoma posted eight unanswered to take an 8-1 victory Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of a three game series at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Waves (7-5) simply made too many defensive mistakes against the Sooners (11-1).
Pepperdine tallied its lone run in the fourth. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) led off with a single, advance to second on a sacrifice by Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) and scored on a two-out double by Langlois, slammed to the base of the wall down the left field line for a 1-0 lead.
Oklahoma wasted no time bouncing back and plated five runs, four unearned in the bottom of the fourth. Garrett Carey hit a one-out solo shot – the first of three home runs hit by the Sooners – tying the contest at 1-1. After a walk, Pepperdine’s Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) got a groundout for the second out, but then a costly error opened the floodgates.
A two-run double by Jack Mayfield made it 3-1 and Max White launched a two-run homer to left for a 5-1 lead. It would be all the Sooners need as they went to their bullpen with one out in the sixth and Billy Waltrip was impressive, allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk in 3.2 innings in collecting the save.
Oklahoma capitalized on its opportunities in the eighth inning, tacking on three insurance runs on a two-run single by Craig Aiken after a fielding error and a solo home run by Mayfield. All told, the Waves committed four errors in the contest.
McClelland (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (one earned) off five hits and walked two in 4.0 innings. Adam Choplick (2-0) collected the win, going 5.1 innings, allowing one run off four hits and struck out three and walked three.
With its seven-game road trip at an end, Pepperdine returns to Malibu to welcome Seton Hall for a three-game series beginning Friday, March, 8 at Eddy D. Field Stadium. First pitch against the Pirates is set for 2:00 p.m.
