Silverstein Bomb Punctuates Waves 11-2 Victory Over VCU
Feb. 22, 2012
MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team completed the two-game sweep of the visiting Virginia Commonwealth Rams with an 11-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. A pair of big innings from the Waves' bats put the game out of reach as the team tallied five runs in the first and five in the fourth.
The Waves (4-1) saw six different players amass a total of 11 hits, highlighted by a bomb to center from senior infielder Miles Silverstein(Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS). The home run was his first of the season.
On the mound, sophomore lefty Matt Maurer(Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) in his first start of the season, worked through some jams in the first three innings and was able to come through unscathed, as he threw five complete innings, allowed only four hits and struck out three en route to the win.
The Waves got to the Rams' (1-4) starter Ryan Morrison early and took advantage of their speed on the base paths, as Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS), who was hit by a pitch, went first to third on a Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) single to get in scoring position. The Waves would then take advantage of the Rams' errors in the field, as two runs would score on fielding errors. With no outs Tony Cooper(San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) would double to center to score another run for the Waves. That would be the end to Morrison's day for the Rams.
Freshman lefty Matt Lees would come in for VCU, but after another run on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS), Silverstein would blast his home run for the fifth run of the inning.
The bottom of the fourth inning would start much like the first for the Waves, as the leadoff hitter, Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawai'i/Konawaena HS) was hit by a pitch to get on base. A walk by Gelalich would follow and Vincej would load the bases with a bunt single down the third base line. The Waves would take advantage of the Rams' control problems, as Sever was hit by a pitch to push across a run. Cooper would get on the board again, driving in two for his second and third RBI of the day. The Rams would call to the bullpen, but a single by Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif./Denison Univ.) would score another run and the Waves would cap things off with a fifth run in the inning to put the score at 10-0.
In the bottom of the fifth the Waves would strike again for the final time as Vincej had an RBI knock up the middle to score Austin Davidson(Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) from second.
Maurer gave way to Cody Dickerson(Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) who in the top of the sixth recorded a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
The Rams would push across two runs in the seventh courtesy of three hits to put the score at 11-2.
The Waves will have Thursday off and then will welcome Fresno State to Eddy D. Field Stadium for a three-game set beginning at 2 p.m. PT on Friday, Feb. 24.
