Miller Throws Gem and Bats Stay Hot as Waves Defeat VCU 6-1
Feb. 21, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team ran its win total to three behind a stellar start from sophomore righty Corey Miller and continued hot hitting up and down the lineup, as the Waves defeated Virginia Commonwealth 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) faced a bit of a rocky start that included surrendering a leadoff walk and a run to VCU (1-3) in the top of the first, but he put a stop to it there, recovering to throw eight innings, allowing only three total hits, one walk and tallying five strikeouts. After a first inning double, he allowed only pair of singles, cooling off the hot bats the Rams had swung over the weekend at Long Beach State. The win is the first of the year for Miller, who was making his first collegiate start.
At the plate, the Waves (3-1) collected eight hits and saw another player hit his first home run, as freshman Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) hit a towering shot off the scoreboard in right field in the fifth inning to give the Waves a 2-1 lead and spark a four-run rally in the inning.
After going down 1-0 in the first inning, the Waves tied things up in the bottom of the third after James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) led off with a double, Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) followed with a single to right field and a sacrifice fly from Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) brought Grandpre home.
The fifth inning was really when the Waves broke the game open. Following Davidson's leadoff home run, the Waves mounted a two-out rally, as Vincej singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The speedy shortstop then stole third and Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) drove him home with a single. The Waves were able to take advantage of a passed ball to advance to scoring position again. Tony Cooper (San Carlos, Calif./Canada College) drove in Sever for the third run of the inning. Cooper would steal second and the Rams would walk Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Denison University). Aaron Brown would follow with an RBI single to score Cooper. The Waves would again take advantage of their speed as they executed a double steal, with Brown advancing to second and Forgatch stealing home.
The Waves will look to sweep the two-game series as they host VCU at 2 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
