Feb. 19, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team hosted the Japan Railway East team in an international exhibition Wednesday, falling 7-3 to the Japanese squad at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves finally figured out the JRE pitching late in the contest, but couldn’t pull off the comeback after JRE took a 7-0 lead in the first five innings.
Pepperdine used six different pitchers in the game, settling in after the fifth inning to not allow a run. JRE still finished with 13 hits in the contest, 11 of which came in the first five frames. JRE put up three runs in both the second and fifth. The Waves outscored JRE 3-0 over the final four innings of play and outhit the Japanese club 5-2 over that span.
Devin Carter (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) made it a four run game with a ninth inning homer to left field, the Waves’ seventh hit of the day. The Carter shot drove in Jack Ross (Gilroy, Calif./Palma HS) who singled earlier in the frame.
Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) finished the day with two hits to lead the Waves and Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) drove in the first run for Pepperdine. Caruso entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, driving a ball into left field to plate Rodriguez, who had doubled earlier for his second hit.
Evan Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) worked a hitless eighth inning for the Waves and Ian Doughty (Marvel, Colo./Piedra Vista HS) held the JRE squad scoreless through the sixth and seventh. Mat Snider (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos HS) came in to finish it out with a scoreless ninth.
Four players posted multiple hits for JRE. The Japanese club used three pitchers to hold Pepperdine to five hits on the day.
It was the Waves’ first and only scheduled exhibition of the season. Pepperdine returns to regular season action this weekend hosting Utah Valley for a three game set. The series opens Friday at 2 p.m.
