MALIBU, Calif.- In a game shortened to eight innings due to Oklahoma's travel plans, the Pepperdine baseball team defeated the No. 14 Sooners 7-6 at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves bats were again hot today, tallying 11 hits, including a pair of home runs and an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, which plated the eventual winning run.

The series victory over the Sooners (1-2) was the first series win for the Waves (2-1) over a Big 12 team since they took two-of-three from Oklahoma State in 2006.

The day started out rocky for the Waves, as lefty starter Alex Najera (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) struggled with command and loaded the bases without recording an out before giving way to freshman Andrew Alvarez (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King HS), who held the Sooners to three and gave up nothing more in four innings of work. In total the Waves used seven pitchers, including Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), who picked up the win with 2/3 of an inning of relief and starting right fielder Aaron Brown(Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS), who slammed the door in the top half of the eighth to notch his first collegiate save.

Wearing the 80's throwback uniforms in honor of Pepperdine's 75th anniversary, the Waves answered the Sooners in the bottom half of the first, courtesy of Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After both pitchers hung zeros in the second, the Waves broke through in the bottom of the third, courtesy of solo shots from Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./Dennison University) and Langlois, a double by Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) and an RBI single by James Grandpre(Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) to put the Waves ahead 4-3. Forgatch, Davidson and Grandpre all finished the day with two hits each.

The Waves pushed two more across in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of an RBI groundout from Zach Vincej(Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) , which resulted in a throwing error by Sooner shortstop Caleb Bushyhead, which plated the second run.

Back came the Sooners, though, as they strung together a few hits and pushed across two in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game at six, but again, the Waves would have an answer.

Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and was pushed around on a single from Grandpre and a walk to Gelalich before Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep.) came up with the clutch two-out single which drove in the decisive seventh run.

The Waves return to action Tuesday at home with the front end of a two-game set against Virginia Commonwealth. Game starts at 2 p.m. PT.
