Feb. 17, 2012
MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team looked strong as it opened up its 73rd season on Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium, but fell in a close 4-3 decision to the visiting No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners.
The Waves (0-1) held a 2-0 lead through the first three frames, but the Sooners (1-0) would come back to tie things up with two in the top of the fourth. In the fifth the Waves and Sooners both saw runs cross the plate, but the Sooners' run in the top of the sixth, scored by Matt Oberste proved to be the difference.
Starter Jon Moscot(Pacific Palisades, Palisades Charter HS) threw 5 2/3 solid innings, with six strikeouts and no walks, but came away with the loss for the Waves. Lefty Jordan John came in for the Sooners with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and would pitch 3.1 total innings in a winning effort.
The Waves came out swinging in the first inning, as shortstop Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) got things started off with a single to center field. Freshman centerfielder Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) followed with his first collegiate base knock to left field. With one out, redshirt freshman Bryan Langlois(Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) not only got his first collegiate hit, but also his first collegiate RBI as his double to left field drove in Vincej and gave the Waves the 1-0 lead.
In the second the Waves again got to Sooner starter Dillon Overton, as freshman catcher James Grandpre (Lancaster, Calif./Desert Christian HS) singled to center field to start the inning. Senior third baseman Miles Silverstein(Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) came up with a long double off the left field wall that was inches from being a home run. With Grandpre on third, Vincej hit a sac fly to right that scored the freshman and put the Waves up 2-0.
Both starters would move quickly until the top of the fourth, where the Sooners tied things up with two runs and would add another in the top of the fifth.
The Waves would answer with an RBI single by freshman Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) in the top of the fifth that would give the Waves a 3-2 lead as redshirt senior Matt Forgatch(San Marino, Calif./Denison University) came around to score.
However in the top of the sixth the Sooners would strike one more time, as Garrett Carey came through with the RBI single to take a 4-3 lead. Sophomore righty Corey Miller(Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS) would relieve Moscot and get Jack Mayfield to ground out to third for the final out of the inning.
The Waves threatened in the bottom of the ninth, as Vincej singled off the Sooners' closer Damien Magnifico with one out. Gelalich walked to put runners at first and second. Joe Sever(San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine Prep HS) followed with a soft liner that looked like it was going to drop, but the Sooners' second baseman made a great grab and doubled off Vincej at second to seal the 4-3 decision.
The Waves and Sooners will be back in action again at Eddy D. Field Stadium at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday. The game will be streamed via WaveCasts for free on pepperdinesports.com.
