Waves Run at NCAA West Regional on Friday
Nov. 14, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine cross country teams will be in action at the NCAA West Regional Championship on Friday at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif.
Pepperdine is sending seven women and seven men to the event. The men's 10K race begins at 10:30 a.m., with the women's 6K following at 11:45 a.m.
Only the top two teams and the top four individuals from teams not advancing in each race will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, set for November 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Thirty-seven different schools will be represented in the women's competition, and 31 for the men.
"Our women are looking for further improvements from the WCC meet," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "We are expecting some fast times and PRs as the course should be flat and fast, and with some great competition. Our men are stepping up to the 10K after a full season of 8Ks. For our mostly freshman team, that's a big jump. It will be a good experience for them. Everyone is looking forward to racing in Sacramento."
Pepperdine's runners in the women's event will be senior Adrianna Davies (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS), sophomore Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS), freshman Elle Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS), senior Hayley Lytle (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS), freshman Monica McGinty (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS), junior Lisa Santroch (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS) and freshman Lindsay Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS).
Engel has been Pepperdine's top finisher a team-high three times. Davies was the Waves' leader at both Malibu events: the Pepperdine Invitational and the West Coast Conference Championships.
The Waves' men are senior Jesse Aston (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra HS) and freshmen Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS), Aric Crowell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS), Ben Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS), John Lawlor (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS), Gordie Thomas (Fallbrook, Calif./Great Oak HS) and Torin Wile (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS).
Fox led the Waves at the season's first two events, while Thomas came in first at the next two, and Blanchard was the top runner at the WCC Championships.
