Pepperdine XC Heads to Oregon for NCAA West Regionals
MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's men's and women's cross country teams head to Oregon and the Springfield Country Club Saturday for the 2009 NCAA West Regionals. The men's 10K race will start at 9:45 a.m. and the women's 6K is set to begin at 10:45 a.m.
Student-athletes will race entirely on grass and mostly on fairways. The course consists of three relatively flat loops-an outer loop, an inner loop, and a finish loop. The outer loop is approximately 2320 meters in length, the inner loop is approximately 2150 meters in length, and the finishing loop is approximately 1350 meters in length.
No more than seven runners from each institution may participate and the top two teams will automatically qualify for the championship meet taking place Monday, November 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Admission to the competition is free and results will be available at both NCAA.org and GoDucks.com following the conclusion of the meet.
Pepperdine head coach Robert Radnoti is taking the same men's roster that finished sixth two weeks earlier at the West Coast Conference Championships. Saturday's race marks the season's first 10K for Pepperdine and the first collegiate 10K for freshman harriers Wesley Blundell (Brush Prairie, Wash/Prairie HS) and Sean King (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS).
The rest of the Waves' men's roster includes junior co-team captains Seth Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) and Conrad Wozniak (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS), senior Garrett Reim (Fircrest, Wash./Curtis HS), junior Eric Magana (Whittier, Calif./La Serna HS) and sophomore Kenny Smith (Willits, Calif./Willits HS).
Smith led all Pepperdine runners to the finish line on the 8K WCC Championship Course at Crystal Springs, recording a time of 26:28.
Radnoti made two changes on the women's side following WCCs, adding senior Liz Lyons (West Warwick, R.I./St. Mary Academy) and sophomore Aneasha Lawrence (Sun Valley, Calif./Village Christian HS) to the Waves' postseason roster.
Lyons' last race was supposed to be several weeks ago at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Invitation, but she's kept practicing with the team every morning since then and Radnoti felt it was right to reward her hard work.
"So far she is the first and only four-year starter I've coached since I got here to Pepperdine," he said, "and it will be great to watch her compete in her final collegiate race alongside her parents, who are flying in all the way from Rhode Island."
Lyons is on track to graduate this December and is currently applying to law schools.
Lawrence posted a solid season for the Waves, but was unable to compete at WCCs due to illness and was replaced in the lineup by sophomore Paige Mobley (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS).
Lawrence raced at all five regular competitions and averaged a fourth-place showing for Pepperdine. Her fastest time of the season was a 5K mark of 18:28.30, which she recorded at the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Cal State Bakersfield.
Mobley remains on the roster for this weekend's race and will be joined by sophomores Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass. (Hopkinton HS), Elizabeth Coe (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS), and Hannah DeWalt (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor, Wash.) and freshman Megan Doeding (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS).
