Nov. 15, 2013
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Pepperdine cross country teams wrapped up the 2013 season on Friday with Katie Engel and Jesse Aston leading the women's and men's teams, respectively, at the NCAA West Regional Championship.
Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) finished in the top half of the 225 runners competing in the women's 6K, as the sophomore placed 95th overall in 21:22. It was her fourth time leading Pepperdine this season in six races.
Also scoring for the women, who came in 27th place as a team, were senior Hayley Lytle (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS), senior Adrianna Davies (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS), freshman Elle Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS) and junior Lisa Santroch (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS).
"Our women ran pretty well with several PRs," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "Katie did a nice job running in front for the team. She capped her second year strongly and will lead us nicely for the next two years. It was a picture-perfect day for cross country and our women raced well."
Aston (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra HS), a senior running in his final collegiate cross country race, led the Waves for the first time this season. He was followed by freshmen Aric Crowell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS), Gordie Thomas (Fallbrook, Calif./Great Oak HS), Ben Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS) and Torin Wile (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS).
"Jesse led our men and he ran pretty well," Radnoti said. "We've got a lot of work to do as we'll try to get better next year."
