Pepperdine Runs Well at Bronco XC Invitational
Oct. 19, 2013
Katie Engel, Ellie Smith and Gordie Thomas were Pepperdine cross country's top finishers in their respective races at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday morning.
The Waves' top runners were competing in their final race before Pepperdine hosts the West Coast Conference Championships in Malibu for the first time in two weeks (Saturday, November 2).
Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS), a sophomore, was Pepperdine's top finisher for the third time in four meets this season. She placed 30th in the 8k Invitational with a time of 21:18.6. Following her to the finish line were freshman Elle Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS), junior Lisa Santroch (Shoreline, Wash./Shorewood HS), senior Hayley Lytle (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) and freshman Monica McGinty (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS).
Pepperdine ran its top nine runners in the Invitational, and entered eight more competitors in the 6k Open. Smith (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck HS) took 22nd place overall to lead the Waves in that event.
"Our women ran well today," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "Pretty much all of our girls ran a PR. This is the course for next year's conference championship so it was good to see. I'm pleased with the results, I'm pleased with our times, and it's good to see everyone progressing really nicely."
Pepperdine's top three finishers in the men's race were all freshmen: Thomas (Fallbrook, Calif./Great Oak HS), Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS) and Ben Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS). Thomas was Pepperdine's top runner for the second meet in a row.
"Our men ran first and I'm pretty pleased with the performance of our top three," Radnoti said. "Our goal is to get as many freshmen under 26 minutes as possible and three of them did that today. That's something we can build on."
On Friday (Oct. 25), the Waves will send some of their runners to Cal State Fullerton's Titan Invitational.
