SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The Pepperdine cross country teams continued their preparation for the West Coast Conference Championships, which are just two weeks away, with a solid performance at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday.

"Some of our athletes ran well and they were the ones who have been injury-free and running strong," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "The ones that didn't run so well had some pulls and sickness and little injuries, so not everyone ran as well as we had hoped. So it was a bit of a mixed bag today.

"We had ideal, perfect conditions, on a good, flat course. We need another good week of training this week and keep getting ready for the conference meet."

The women placed 17th out of 21 teams in the 5K Invitational held at Baylands Regional Park, but finished third among the five WCC schools at the competition, beating out host Santa Clara and Saint Mary's.

Senior Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS), who won this race last year, is still working herself back into form after being limited by an injury that prevented her from training all summer. Still, she led the Waves in her second meet of the season and placed 29th overall with a time of 17:42.8.

"Lauren was our best runner but she was a little disappointed, she was hoping to be a little closer to where she was last year," Radnoti said. "She's not there yet. But we still expect her to get there come the conference meet."

Pepperdine's other scorers were senior Aneasha Lawrence (Sun Valley, Calif./Village Christian HS), sophomore Adrianna Davies (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS), senior Hannah DeWalt (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) and senior Courtney Rolando (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek HS).

"Aneasha ran very well for us and bounced back from her Stanford run," Radnoti said. "That's encouraging because she has been working harder than everyone. She's improved significantly each year on this course."

In the men's 8k Open race, senior Kenny Smith (Willits, Calif./Willits HS) took top honors for the Waves for the fourth time in four meets. He placed 13th overall with a time of 25:31.0.

"Kenny ran pretty well," Radnoti said. "He was hoping to be a little bit faster but we got stuck in the open race, where the competition was not as strong. He had some good splits and he felt strong, we just needed him in a more competitive race."

Smith's next four teammates to finish were junior Jonathan Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS), senior Jordan Wozniak (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS), sophomore Jesse Aston (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra HS) and freshman David Bermea (Rosamond, Calif./Rosamond HS).

The men took 11th out of 20 teams.

Some of the Waves will take part in the Titan Invitational, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, on Friday night (Oct. 21). The WCC Championships are on Saturday, Oct. 29, in Belmont, Calif.
