Engel, Rahaeuser Lead Cross Country Teams Again at Stanford
Sept. 29, 2012
Katie Engel and senior Jonathan Rahaeuser led the Pepperdine cross country teams to the finish line as the Waves took part in the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.
The Waves' women had a different top five than usual as Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) was followed by freshman Hannah Turpin (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon HS), junior Sarah Attar (Escondido, Calif./Escondido HS), freshman Rachel Rant (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) and freshman Kami Bates (Lacey, Wash./Northwest Christian HS).
"Katie continues to grow her confidence and speed," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "But our normal two, three and four runners all had problems. Stasia Demick and Kelly Smyth were both knocked down, and Rachel Rant reinjured a sore heel. Those three will be back stronger than ever at the next meet.
"The good news is that it opened the door for Hannah Turpin to move up as our number two runner. She set a nice PR by a half-minute. And Sarah Attar also continues to run one to two minutes faster than previous years. It's exciting to see the team's improvements."
Engel finished in 109th place overall out of a field of 292 runners with a time of 22:46 in the 6K.
On the men's side, Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) took 189th place out of 265 runners with a time of 27:11 in the 8K. Radnoti was also happy with freshman Jordan Scandlyn (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton HS), who finished 15 seconds behind Rahaeuser.
"Jordan's a bright spot, he continues to make good strides toward becoming a nice Division I runner for Pepperdine," Radnoti said.
