Waves Run at Stanford Invitational
Sept. 28, 2013
Katie Engel led the Pepperdine women's cross country team to the finish line on Saturday morning as the Waves competed at the Stanford Invitational.
It was the first super-sized meet of the season for the Waves, as the Stanford races included 26 women's teams and 28 men's squads.
Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) has been the top women's runner at two of three meets this season. She came in 39th place overall in the 6k with a time of 22:46. Freshman Elle Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS) came in 57th and senior Adrianna Davies (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) was 65th. Also scoring for the Waves were sophomore Kelly Smyth (Toms River, N.J./Toms River HS East) and freshman Monica McGinty (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS).
"Our women's team ran pretty strongly," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "We're pretty much missing three of our top runners, so I'm encouraged by where we're headed. We've got a really, really strong six that's going to be healthy in time for the WCC Championships, and I expect that will help us to our best finish in a while."
On the men's side, the top finisher was freshman Gordie Thomas (Fallbrook, Calif./Great Oak HS). It's the first time he's led the Waves.
"Our men's team also has some injuries they're dealing with," Radnoti said. "Gordie fell about 200 meters in and got trampled on. We need to get everyone healthy so we're at our strongest at the end of the season."
Pepperdine has a couple of more tuneups before the West Coast Conference Championships, which the Waves will host in Malibu for the first time on November 2. In their next meet, the Waves will return to the Bay Area for Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational on Saturday, October 19.
