Women's Cross Country Team Opens 2013 With Second-Place Finish
Aug 31, 2013
"I am really, really excited about our women's team," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "They ran extremely well and the depth that we were looking to build this year is there. When you combine our returners and the freshmen, we have the makings of a really nice team. Everyone was excited about the meet."
The Pepperdine women were led to the finish line by sophomore Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) and junior Lisa Santroch (Shoreline, Wash./Shoreline HS), who were eighth and 10th, respectively, in the 5K. Engel, one of the team's best returners, was also the squad's top runner at the 2012 Mark Covert Classic, but her time of 18:33.1 was 37 seconds better than last year. Santroch was competing in her first cross country race after playing soccer the past two seasons.
Also turning in strong showings were senior Adrianna Davies (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) in 16th place, freshman Elle Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS) in 18th place and freshman Lindsay Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) in 27th place. Davies was running her first race since 2011 after being injured last season.
Although rival Loyola Marymount won the women's race, the Waves finished ahead of six other teams: USC, Cal State Fullerton, San Diego State, Long Beach State, San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield.
On the men's side, the Waves' top six runners in the 8K were freshmen, led by Ben Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS), who came in 61st place.
"For our freshmen that ran in high school, it's not a step up in distance for the women like it is for the men," Radnoti said. "The men are running two more miles, and it's a real stretch to go from three to five miles. But it was a good opener for the men and they learned a lot of things."
Eleven of the 17 Pepperdine women that ran the race were newcomers, while the same was true for seven of the nine men.
"The culture of creating a winning team here is on the upswing and we're really excited about it," Radnoti said.
The Waves will be hosting the Pepperdine Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 9 a.m. in Alumni Park. It's a preview meet for the West Coast Conference Championships, which Pepperdine is hosting for the first time on November 2.
