Pepperdine Men's And Women's Cross Teams Defeat San Diego On Saturday

Oct. 4, 2003

The Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams turned in impressive performances Saturday morning as they both won their respective events in a dual match against San Diego in Malibu.

The men captured the four-mile event for the first time in 11 dual meets against San Diego, defeating the Toreros by a 25-32 score. Sophomore Chad Trammell paced the Waves, winning the race with a time of 21:36. Senior Louis Rich placed second, recording a time of 21:58.

Pepperdine had six runners place in the Top 10. Steve Trudelle was San Diego's top finisher, placing third with a time of 22:22.

"I am very pleased with our men's performance today," head coach Dick Kampmann said. "San Diego traditionally has a very strong team and it is a great accomplishment for our team to perform well and finally defeat the Toreros."

"Chad and Louis set the pace early and ran a very strong race and it was nice to see our entire team run well," Kampmann added.

In the women's five-kilometer race, Pepperdine won for just the third time in 11 dual meets against San Diego, defeating the Toreros by a 23-45 score. Sophomore Lauren Tyree led the Waves, placing second with a time of 19:10.

San Diego's Tiffanie Marley won the event with a time of 18:33.

It was a dominating performance for the Waves, who captured eight of the Top 10 spots. Freshman Tarrah Crowley finished, logging a time of 19:18, while freshman Karen Porter (19:51), senior Christine Carter (20:04), junior Katie Clary (20:11), freshman Beth Bedingfield (20:23), freshman Kyla Maher (20:31) and Lauren Gray (20:32) placed fifth through 10th respectively.

"Our depth really showed in the women's race today," Kampann said. "Having eight people finish in the Top 10 really demonstrates the talent level of our team and how close our runners are to each other."

Pepperdine travels to San Diego next Saturday to compete in the Tritan Classic hosted by UC San Diego in La Jolla.
