Sophomore Kyla Maher continued her impressive early-season performance as she led the Pepperdine women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the 15-team Aztec Cross Country Invitational at Balboa Park in San Diego on Saturday.
Freshman Brian Washburn was the leading finisher for the men's team which placed 13th.
Maher, who has been the Waves' top finisher in all three events thus far this season, placed 34th with a time of 19:43 in the five-kilometer run. Freshman Taylor Carroll clocked a time of 19:46 to place 36th.
Duke dominated the competition as it placed five runners in the top six to total 18 points. Arizona was second with 97 points and was followed by Northern Arizona (109), Southern Utah (149) and USC (176). The Waves totaled 187 points.
Duke's Shannon Rowbury was the top individual performer as she recorded a time 17:03.
In the men's eight-kilometer race, Northern Arizona totaled 65 points to win the team competition. Arizona placed second with 87 points and was followed by Cal Poly Pomona (113), Cal Coast TC (127) and Cal State San Marcos (160). Pepperdine totaled 342 points for a 13th-place finish.
Washburn led the Waves with a time of 28:03 to place 45th. Central Arizona's Obed Mutanya won the individual title with, clocking a time of 25:02.
