Pepperdine Men's And Women's Cross Country Teams Compete at UC Riverside Invitational
Sept. 17, 2003
After a two week break, the Pepperdine men's and women's cross country teams return to action this week when they travel to Riverside, California, to compete in the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday, September 20.
The eight-kilometer men's race is slated to begin at 8:15 a.m., with the five-kilometer women's race will follow at 9 a.m. The event will be contested on the UC Riverside Agricultural Fields.
This weekend's races marks the second event of the year for the Pepperdine cross crounty teams. The Waves opened their 2003 campaign on August, 30, competing at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational.
The men's team placed 13th in the 13-team field and was led by sophomore Chad Trammell, who finished 13th overall with a time of 26:14.5.
On the women's side, sophomore Lauren Tyree helped Pepperdine to a 10th place finish as she placed 19th.
"I was pleased with the effort and performances of our kids during the Cal State Fullerton Invitational," head coach Dick Kampmann said. "We are ahead of schedule at this point of the season and our main focus is continuing to improve and reach our peak at the West Coast Conference (WCC) Championships in November.
"Since that competition, the kids have continued to train hard and I am looking forward to seeing improvement as we enter the UC Riverside Invitational," Kampmann added.
The Pepperdine men's team was picked to finish fifth in the West Coast Conference (WCC) in a vote of conference coaches. The Waves placed fourth at last year's WCC Championships.
The Pepperdine women's team was tabbed to place third in the WCC by the coaches after registering a fourth-place finish at the 2002 conference championships.
Following this week's UC Riverside Invitational, Pepperdine resumes its schedule on Saturday, September 27, when it takes part in the Cal Lutheran Festival in nearby Thousand Oacks, California.
