Three School Records Fall at San Francisco State Distance Carnival
April 6, 2012
MALIBU, Calif. - School records by Lauren Lodge, Aneasha Lawrence and Jonathan Rahaeuser highlighted the Pepperdine track team's efforts at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday, and Lodge took first place overall in the women's 5,000 meters.
Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) broke her own record set earlier this year by more than four seconds. The top four finishers were all in her heat. Lodge held off the second-place competitor, Kristine Lozoya of UC Davis, by a little more than a half-second with a winning time of 16:54.24.
"Lolo just ran a phenomenal race," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "She opened up a big lead and then after two miles the UC Davis girl caught and passed her, and opened up a slight five-meter lead. But that's all Lolo would give, and then she caught her with 1,000 meters to go and retook the lead. The UC Davis girl tried to pass on the next four straightaways and each time Lolo fought her off. Finally in the last 100 meters Lolo maintained her lead and finished with the victory as the crowd was going wild. It was probably the most exciting race of the day."
Lodge has set three school records this year (also the 1,500 and the 3,000) and this is the third time she has won a race (she was victorious both times she ran the 3,000).
Lawrence (Simi Valley, Calif./Village Christian HS) broke the record in the women's 800 meters. Her time of 2:19.46 was just a shade better than Chelsea Wishard's time of 2:19.70 in 2008. Lawrence placed third in her heat and 13th overall out of 33 runners.
Rahaeuser (Irvine, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) eclipsed the record in the men's 1,500 meters by more than half a second. He ran 3:58.69, beating Chris Ogle's mark of 3:59.28 set in 2008. Like Lawrence, Rahaeuser finished third in his heat and 13th overall, this time out of 45 competitors.
Pepperdine also got strong performances from junior Sara Woods-Decker (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon Honors HS/Chandler-Gilbert CC), who ran the best women's 200 meters by any Wave this season and placed second in her heat and third overall with a time of 26.24 seconds, and freshman Triston Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo./Briarcrest Christian), who ran a season-best time of 1:00.90 to take third in her heat and eighth overall in the women's 400 meters.
Other Waves who had the women's team's top times were junior Summer Enalen (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS), in the 100 meters, senior Ana Prim (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) in the 1,500 meters and junior Sarah Goodman (Issaquah, Wash./Liberty HS) in the two-mile.
Additionally, the 4x400-meter relay team of Woods-Decker, Brown, Enalen and junior Kasey Ullery (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS/Moorpark College) finished first among three teams with a season-best time of 4:02.79.
The school records set today increases the number set by Pepperdine this season to nine overall.
Next up on the Waves' schedule is the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational a week from Saturday (April 14).
