Lemco, 4x800 Relay Team Highlight Track Team in Georgia
March 2, 2014
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Elle Lemco won the women's 5,000 meters and Pepperdine set a school record in the 4x800-meter relay to highlight the Waves' track teams' participation in the Savannah State Relays on Saturday.
The Waves make an annual trip to Tampa, Fla., during Spring Break to volunteer at the Hope Children's Home as part of Project Serve. After doing that for a few days, the Waves then turn their attention to a weekend track meet.
"The entire week was amazing," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "It was a wonderful opportunity to serve at the Hope Children's Home again. It was a perfect day for a track meet. We had a great time and everyone was excited about the meet."
Lemco (San Jose, Calif./Prospect HS), a freshman, won the 5,000 meters by a large margin. She finished with a time of 18:18.92, nearly two minutes in front of the next competitor.
The 4x800-meter relay team consisted of sophomores Stasia Demick (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names Academy) and Katie Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) and freshmen Lindsay Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and Alex Campana (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS). They won the race in a time of 9:48.41, breaking the previous school record established in 2006.
Demick came in third place in the 400 meters, while sophomore Syrii Daniel (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa HS) was fourth in the 100 meters.
Freshman Tori Occhipinti (Coto de Caza, Calif./Crean Lutheran HS) improved her time in the 100-meter hurdles to 16.32 seconds, which ranks #3 on Pepperdine's all-time top five list.
The 4x400-meter relay team also did well, coming in second place. Demick and Sheaffer were joined by senior Channing Williamson (Kennesaw, Ga./North Cobb HS) and freshman Jordan Spencer (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie HS).
Pepperdine next competes in a four-team meet with host Riverside Community College, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State next Saturday (March 8).
