This Week at Pepperdine: November 11-17
Nov. 11, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - It's a big week of events in Malibu for Pepperdine: the women's basketball team has its home opener on Thursday, and both the men's water polo and women's volleyball squads will celebrate their Senior Days on Saturday. Plus, Saturday also will be women's volleyball coach Nina Matthies' final match in Firestone Fieldhouse.
Also, the men's water polo team has a home exhibition vs. BYU on Saturday. In addition, the men's basketball team hits the road for a pair of contests, and the cross country teams head to the state capitol for the NCAA West Regional Championship.
Frederick Wedel of the men's golf team opens the show, and interviews take place with Brendan Lane (men's basketball), Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever (women's volleyball) and Mike Tragitt (men's water polo).
Here's a look at the week's events:
Wednesday: at UC Riverside (Riverside, Calif.), 7 p.m.
Saturday: at Central Michigan (Mount Pleasant, Mich.), 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET.
The men's basketball team hits the road for its first two away games of the season, playing return games at both UC Riverside and Central Michigan. The Waves' roster turnover was utilized to good effect in the season opener vs. San Diego Christian over the weekend, as Pepperdine players making their debuts accounted for 59% of the points and four of the five slots in the starting lineup.
Thursday: vs. UC Irvine (Firestone Fieldhouse), 7 p.m.
After strong showings in the first two games of the season - a win at defending WAC champion Seattle and a four-point loss at UCLA - the women's basketball team has its home opener on Thursday against UC Irvine. It's the only home game for Pepperdine in the month of November. Bria Richardson has been terrific early for the Waves, as she scored game highs of 16 points vs. the Redhawks and 25 against the Bruins.
MEN'S WATER POLO
Saturday: vs. UCLA (Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool),11 a.m.
Only two MPSF regular-season games remain for the men's water polo team, and Saturday brings the home finale as the Waves host #2 UCLA. The Waves will honor Matthew Carter, Julian Kotylak, Mike Tragitt, Bence Valics and Danny White in a pregame ceremony, then will try to pull the upset and secure a spot in the upcoming MPSF Tournament.
Saturday: vs. Loyola Marymount (Firestone Fieldhouse), 1 p.m.
Be sure to make your way to Firestone Fieldhouse on Saturday to witness Nina Matthies' final home match. The Waves' coach of 31 seasons announced on Monday that this would be her final campaign with the indoor volleyball team. Matthies will remain an integral part of the Waves' athletic department, however, and will solely focus her coaching efforts on the sand volleyball team. Matthies has stood on the sidelines for 371 contests inside Firestone Fieldhouse, producing a record of 278-93 (.749). Also being honored on Saturday will be seniors Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever as they compete for the final time in Malibu.
Saturday: vs. BYU (Firestone Fieldhouse), approximately 3 p.m.
Fans can get a first look at the 2014 edition of the men's volleyball team this Saturday, when the Waves face BYU in exhibition action approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's volleyball match. Pepperdine boasts 11 returners from last year's 14-12 squad, including six of its seven starters. Although the Waves must contend with the loss of All-American Maurice Torres, the squad has plenty of experience returning, including All-American setter Matt West, All-MPSF outside hitter Josh Taylor and All-MPSF middle blocker Parker Kalmbach.
Friday: at NCAA West Regional Championship (Sacramento, Calif.), 10:30 a.m.
Seven men and seven women will cap off the 2013 season at the NCAA West Regional Championship. Thirty-seven different schools will be represented at the race, which takes place at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex. The Waves will run Adrianna Davies, Katie Engel, Elle Lemco, Hayley Lytle, Monica McGinty, Lisa Santroch and Lindsay Sheaffer on the women's side, and Jesse Aston, Ben Fox, Gordie Thomas, Torin Wile, Nick Blanchard, Aric Crowell and John Lawlor on the men's.
