This Week at Pepperdine: October 14-20

MALIBU, Calif. -Waves Weekend is coming up, bringing some of the biggest events of the year to Pepperdine's campus, including Blue & Orange Madness on Friday night and the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday evening.

Also, the men's water polo team begins Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at home on Saturday against UC Santa Barbara (and hosts Air Force in non-conference play on Sunday), while the men's tennis team hosts the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship on campus.

Other teams are on the road: the men's golf team at California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational, the women's soccer team goes to BYU and San Diego, the women's volleyball team visits Loyola Marymount for a Wells Fargo PCH Cup match, the women's tennis team heads to USD for its regional championship tournament, and the cross country team travels to Northern California for the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.

Here's a look at the week's events:

MEN'S & WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Friday: Blue & Orange Madness (Firestone Fieldhouse), 6 p.m.
Multimedia: There will be a free online broadcast of Blue & Orange Madness via WaveCasts, which will start around 8:15 p.m.

The men's and women's basketball teams will get their public unveilings on Friday night with the annual Blue & Orange Madness celebration. Madness Village opens in the Firestone Fieldhouse parking lot at 6 p.m. with the usual fun and games, free T-shirts and free food provided by Chik-fil-A and a dessert truck. Doors open in Firestone Fieldhouse at 8 p.m. for the second part of the event, with the men's and women's basketball teams and other entertainment, including the TNT dunk squad and performances by Pepperdine's Pom Squad and Step Team.

HALL OF FAME

Sunday: 2013 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony (Firestone Fieldhouse), 5 p.m.

The Waves will be honoring women's volleyball coach Nina Matthies, women's tennis coach Gualberto Escudero, men's water polo assistant coach Merrill Moses and former men's basketball player Marcos Leite, as well as Lou & Kathy Colombano in the distinguished service category.

MEN'S WATER POLO

Saturday: vs. UC Santa Barbara (Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool), 12 p.m.
Sunday: vs. Air Force (Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool), 1 p.m.

Promotions: The first 100 Pepperdine students at Saturday's UC Santa Barbara game will get a tank top.

After winning the consolation title at the SoCal Tournament this past weekend, #8 Pepperdine returns home to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Saturday against UC Santa Barbara. In a recent addition to the schedule, Pepperdine will welcome Air Force to Malibu on Sunday in the first meeting between the two squads since 2005. Luke Hewko leads the squad and rates second among MPSF leaders in goals with 43, including a career-high seven against Concordia this past Sunday. Marko Madaras had added 21 goals, while senior Danny White has contributed 19 scoring strikes. All-American Bence Valics continues to showcase his skills between the pipes for Pepperdine and ranks in the top five among MPSF leaders in saves and goals allowed.

MEN'S TENNIS

Friday-Tuesday: USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship (Malibu, Calif.)

Pepperdine plays host to the area's top talent with the annual USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship from Oct. 18-22. The tournament weighs heavy for players looking to break into the dual-season singles and doubles rankings, which will be released in January. Winners of the regional will also gain an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in November. Two Pepperdine players enter the tournament with a preseason singles ranking: Alex Sarkissian at #23 and Francis Alcantara at #71. Together, they rank #48 in doubles, although they have seen limited time together as a doubles pair.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Thursday: at #24 Brigham Young (Provo, Utah), 6 p.m. PT
Saturday: at San Diego (San Diego, Calif.), 6 p.m.
Multimedia: The Waves' match at Brigham Young on Thursday will be broadcast nationally on BYUtv and their contest at San Diego on Saturday is the West Coast Conference Game of the Week and will be carried live on TheW.tv. Live stats will be also available for both contests.

After wrapping up a six-match homestand, Pepperdine continues play in the West Coast Conference with a challenging road trip to #24 Brigham Young on Thursday and a Saturday contest at San Diego. The Waves opened WCC play at home last weekend with a 1-0 win over Gonzaga and a 3-1 loss to #7 Portland. Two Waves rank among national Division I leaders. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Seabert ranks 42nd in saves per game (6.00). All-American candidate Lynn Williams rates 22nd in points per game (1.92) and is 17th in goals per game (0.833). With the game-winning goal against Gonzaga in the WCC opener, the Fresno native continues to climb the career top-10 in both goals (6th/24) and points (7th/62).

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Thursday: at Loyola Marymount (Los Angeles, Calif.), 7 p.m.
Multimedia: Live video and stats will be available for Thursday's match at LMU via the Lions' website.

The Waves face local rival Loyola Marymount inside Gersten Pavilion on Thursday evening. The two squads enter the match tied in the West Coast Conference standings at 3-5. Pepperdine holds a 51-17 all-time record vs. the Lions, including 22-12 when playing in Westchester. Thursday's match will also count toward the Wells Fargo PCH Cup standings. The PCH Cup serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves. Junior Samantha Cashhas been an offensive and defensive force to be reckoned with as of late, reaching double-figures in kills in five of the last seven matches. All season long, Cash has been dominant at the net, ranking in at #21 in the NCAA with 1.35 blocks per set.

CROSS COUNTRY

Saturday: at Santa Clara Bronco Invitational (Sunnyvale, Calif.), 9 a.m.

The cross country teams have their final full-squad tuneup before hosting the West Coast Conference Championships on Nov. 2. Katie Engel has been the women's top runner at two of their first three meets, while Ben Fox has done the same for the men. The Bronco Invitational will start with the men's 8k and be followed by the women's 6k.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Thursday-Monday: at USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship (San Diego, Calif.)

The women's tennis team is set to compete in its second of three fall tournaments in San Diego with the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, which runs from Oct. 17-21. Lorraine Guillermo was extremely successful at the 2012 regional championship, reaching the semifinal round. It took three sets and the tournament's top seed to finally defeat Guillermo, now a junior. She enters the championship ranked #29 in singles, while senior Ale Granillo is listed at #68.

MEN'S GOLF

Monday-Tuesday: at Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Sonoma, Calif.)

The men's golf team has its second of four fall tournaments at California's Alister MacKenzie Invitational. It's been almost a month since the Waves opened their season up in Washington. Pepperdine's lineup consists of Jeremy Sanders, Frederick Wedel, Parker Page, Nick Thomas and Kevin DeHuff.
