MALIBU, Calif. - The first week of school is in the books, as are the first official sporting events of the 2013-14 school year. The newest edition of This Week at Pepperdine looks at last week's highlights and what's coming up for the Waves' teams.

The women's volleyball team will host its second straight tournament this weekend, while the women's soccer team heads to Michigan and Toledo and the men's water polo team begins its season with mini-tournaments at UCLA and UC Santa Barbara.

The women's soccer team broke into the top 25, while the women's volleyball team went 2-1 at its own Asics Classic and the cross country got its start last week at the Mark Covert Classic.

Among the student-athletes interviewed in this week's show were Lynn Williams of women's soccer (the reigning National Player of the Week), Brooke Honeycutt of women's volleyball, Danny White of men's water polo and Lisa Santroch of cross country.

Last week, the Waves shut out Iona and Delaware before suffering a narrow 3-1 setback to Wisconsin in the tournament finale. Freshman Ryann Chandler made her collegiate debut with 21 digs in a three-set win over Delaware, and finished the weekend with a 4.00 digs/set average. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Kellie Woolever, who dished 11.70 assists per set. and Katie Messing, who tacked down 3.29 kills per set with a .321 hitting percentage.

A tough road schedule continues with a two-game Midwest road tour against #11 Michigan and Toledo. Lynn Williams was named the NSCAA National Player of the Week, the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, the L.A. Schroeder coached Pepperdine for 20 years, including the 1997 NCAA championship, before stepping aside to join U.S. Water Polo. He led the Americans at the last two Olympics, including to a silver medal in 2008. Thirteen players are back that have suited up for the Waves, including senior goalie Bence Valics, who earned All-American honorable mention status last season.
