This Week at Pepperdine: August 26-September 1
Aug 26, 2013
MALIBU, Calif. - A new school year has begun and Pepperdine Athletics kicks off the 2013-14 athletic season with the women's soccer, women's volleyball and cross country teams in action this week. The newest edition of This Week at Pepperdine checks in with each of those teams.
Also, last week was New Student Orientation, and so we visit with some of our newcomers and show off some of the sights and sounds.
This week's events:
The 2013 season begins for the Waves with a rematch of their 2012 season finale. The Golden Bears bested the Waves, 1-0, in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Malibu. The first week presents some tremendous challenges, as Cal is #20 in the preseason NSCAA rankings and the Aggies are #12 (the Waves were second among schools in the also receiving votes category). Seven teams on the 2013 schedule are nationally ranked. Pepperdine has a couple of its stars from last year back, including Lynn Williams, who is on the MAC Hermann Award Watch List, and Michelle Pao, a 2011 All-American. Head coach Tim Ward begins his 16th season as head coach.
The Pepperdine Asics Classic, the first of two home tournaments, starts the 2013 season. Though more than half of the team consists of newcomers, a strong returning core led by setter Kellie Woolever, a 2012 All-American, will try to get the Waves to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. Both the Waves and Wisconsin are receiving votes in the preseason AVCA poll. Nina Matthies, who will be inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame this fall, begins her 31st season in charge of the Waves.
The Waves head down to Orange County for the first of their five regular-season cross country meets. Several newcomers are expected to leap into Pepperdine's top seven this year for both the men and women. In fact, 13 of the 21 women on the roster are freshmen, while the same is true for eight of the 11 men. Head coach Robert Radnoti, now in his eighth year as head coach, took the team to Catalina for preseason training.
