Waves Have One of Their Best Olympics

BEIJING, China – Pepperdine University alums completed one of the school’s best-ever showings at the just-concluded 2008 Beijing Olympics, with four athletes bringing home medals in three different events.

It’s the third time that Pepperdine alums have earned medals in three different sports, matching the school’s best-ever feats of 1984 and 1988.

Only the 1988 Games produced more medalists from Pepperdine, as six Waves reached various podiums that year.

Sean Rooney, a former National Player of the Year with the Waves, earned the biggest prize as he won a gold medal with the USA men’s volleyball team.

Merrill Moses and Jesse Smith picked up silver medals for the USA in men’s water polo, and Simon Aspelin of Sweden claimed a silver medal in the men’s tennis doubles competition.

Pepperdine-affiliated coaches also fared well at the Olympics, although coaches are not awarded medals. Marv Dunphy was the consultant coach for the USA men’s volleyball team that won gold. Former volleyball All-American Troy Tanner was the coach for the USA beach volleyball squad of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, who won their second gold medals. Terry Schroeder may have done the most remarkable coaching job of any USA team, as he led the unheralded men’s water polo squad to a silver-medal finish.

In fact, of the nine Pepperdine players and coaches that went to Beijing, only two were not part of medal-winning teams. Ryan Radmanovich was a player on Canada’s baseball team that placed sixth, and Brian Goorjian was the head coach of the Australia men’s basketball team that finished seventh after losing to the USA “Redeem Team” in the quarterfinals.

Here is a list of which Pepperdine alums have medaled at each Olympics (coaches are not listed since they do not receive medals):
