April 28, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. - The sand volleyball team heads east looking for a second AVCA national championship in three years, while the baseball team has five games in the area, including Tuesday's home contest against Cal Poly.
Here's an in-depth look at the week's events:
Tuesday: vs. Cal Poly (Eddy D. Field Stadium), 3 p.m.
The #17 Pepperdine baseball team goes back to work after a nine-day break with five games on the docket for this week. The Waves host a non-conference matchup with #3 Cal Poly and then head to Long Beach State, before finishing the week with a three-game WCC and Wells Fargo PCH Cup series at second-place Loyola Marymount. The Waves currently sit in first place in the conference standings and hold a four-game lead in the loss column over LMU and Gonzaga.
WOMEN'S SAND VOLLEYBALL
Friday: AVCA National Championship quarterfinal vs. Florida State or Stetson (Gulf Shores, Ala.), 11 a.m. PT
The #2 Pepperdine sand volleyball team enters the season's culminating event this weekend: the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships. The championships once again return to Gulf Shores, Ala., where the Waves boast a dual record of 5-1 and an individual match record of 33-6 (.846). Seeded second, the Waves earned a bye into the quarterfinals and will face either Stetson or #4 Florida State on Friday. A win would advance Pepperdine to Saturday's semifinal, while a loss would relegate the Waves to the back draw where they would have to win once more on Friday in order to continue. The national champion will be crowned on Saturday afternoon. A pairs championship follows on Sunday, with two Pepperdine duos expected to make the field.
Saturday: at Steve Scott Invitational (Irvine, Calif.)
Lisa Santroch is the last member of the track team still competing as she attempts to attain an NCAA qualifying time in the steeplechase. She'll run on Saturday at the Steve Scott Invitational, but is expected to enter the 1,500 meters and the 400-meter hurdles and use this as a training event as she gears up for another go at the steeplechase the following weekend.
