This Week at Pepperdine: April 14-20

MALIBU, Calif. -Pepperdine's various teams recorded 12 wins against just one loss last week, and the Waves will be looking for even more success this week as first-place standings, conference championships and national rankings are at stake.

The men's volleyball team begins the postseason by hosting Long Beach State in an MPSF quarterfinal on Saturday night. The tennis teams close out the regular season looking to finish off perfect WCC records (the women are at home on Wednesday vs. rival LMU). The sand volleyball team also has its home finale on Saturday against Pacific and Saint Mary's.

The first-place baseball team continues WCC play with Thursday-Saturday series vs. San Francisco. The golf teams are in Washington competing for conference championships. The track team will be at the Beach Invitational this weekend.

Ale Granillo of women's tennis opens the show, while interviews take place with Granillo, Matt West (men's volleyball), Becca Strehlow (women's sand volleyball), Grace Na (women's golf) and Kevin DeHuff(men's golf).

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Saturday: vs. Long Beach State (Firestone Fieldhouse), 7 p.m.
Tickets: Tickets for the MPSF quarterfinal cost $10 for adults and $5 for children, seniors and students. Tickets are free for Pepperdine students, faculty and staff with a valid Pepperdine ID.

The #2 Pepperdine men's volleyball team swept both matches vs. Hawaii over the weekend and in doing so, tied for first place in the final MPSF standings. With regular-season co-champion BYU holding the tiebreaker, the Waves enter the tournament as the #2 seed and will host seventh-seeded Long Beach State on Saturday. Pepperdine split the regular-season series against the 49ers, losing in five sets on the road while winning 3-0 at home. The Waves are 12-7 all-time in the first round of the MPSF Tournament, but have only lost in the first round once when playing inside Firestone Fieldhouse.

BASEBALL

The #19 Pepperdine baseball team looks to continue its climb up the national rankings while also holding on to the top spot in the WCC standings with four games scheduled for this week. The Waves, who jumped five spots in the rankings after a 3-1 week, head to Cal State Northridge on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup before hosting San Francisco for a three-game WCC series. Pepperdine took two out of three games from BYU to end last week and also picked up a come-from-behind, walk-off win over USC in the Tuesday game. The Waves have won 14 of their last 16 games.

WOMEN'S SAND VOLLEYBALL

The #2 Pepperdine women's sand volleyball team puts the finishing touches on another phenomenal regular season this Saturday with a doubleheader versus Pacific and Saint Mary's on the home sand of Zuma Beach. Pepperdine went a perfect 3-0 last week at the USAV Collegiate Challenge, sweeping Arizona, CSU Bakersfield and #3 Hawaii. Selections for the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship will be announced next Monday (April 21).

WOMEN'S TENNIS

The #29 Pepperdine women's tennis team looks to wrap up the West Coast Conference regular-season title on Wednesday vs. local rival Loyola Marymount. The Waves have won the last 11 in a row and are a perfect 8-0 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center, while LMU is just 2-6 in the league. Senior Ale Granillowill be honored prior to the match as she competes at home for the final time.

MEN'S TENNIS

First place in the West Coast Conference is on the line on Wednesday as the two top teams in the conference duke it out. The Waves come in at #47 behind a 16-11 overall record, including an 8-0 tally in WCC matches. The Toreros are listed at #49 and are 12-7 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Waves met with USD earlier this season in a nonconference meeting and won 4-1.

WOMEN'S GOLF

The #9 Waves will go for their 13th consecutive WCC crown this week at the Gold Mountain Golf Club. Pepperdine has won 15 of the last 16 titles. Grace Na is the defending champion and will try for her third WCC championship in four years. She's ranked sixth in the country by Golfweek/Sagarin, while Marissa Chowis 25th. Pepperdine is sending the same lineup that won last year, and four of the five that captured the title in 2012.

The men's golf team will need to win the WCC Championships to see its season continue past this week. The Waves have won 17 WCC titles in their history, more than any other school. The Waves are peaking and are coming off their best couple of finishes of the season. Frederick Wedel and Jeremy Sanders lead the team in scoring average and Kevin DeHuffwas named WCC Player of the Month for March.

TRACK

Friday-Saturday: at Beach Invitational (Long Beach, Calif.)

Track season is nearing its end, as this is the last meet that will feature the a significant amount of the Waves' team. After final exams in two weeks, some individuals may continue in search of NCAA qualifying times. Among the highlights in Saturday's Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, Lisa Santroch won the steeplechase, Elle Lemco placed sixth in the 5,000 meters and Stasia Demick and Lindsay Sheaffer ran the two fastest 800s in school history.
