This Week at Pepperdine: January 6-12
Jan. 6, 2014
MALIBU, Calif. - The basketball teams head into the third week of West Coast Conference play, the men's volleyball team begins its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation campaign and the women's swimming and diving team continues competition this week.
Aaron Brown of the baseball team opens the show, and interviews take place with Bria Richardson (women's basketball), Jeremy Major (men's basketball), Josh Taylor (men's volleyball) and Nick Rodionoff (women's swimming and diving head coach).
Here's a look at the week's events:
Saturday: vs. Loyola Marymount (Firestone Fieldhouse), 2 p.m.
Pepperdine fans have another chance to catch the Waves at home when the team hosts Loyola Marymount in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup showdown on Saturday. The contest closes out a three-game homestand for the Waves, who hit the road for a pair of games at Saint Mary's and Pacific next week. Reigning WCC Player of the Week Bria Richardson, who put up 44 points in a double-overtime win over Santa Clara last week, looks to build on an already impressive junior campaign in which she is currently third in the conference in scoring and leading the team with 17.7 points per game. Just under halfway through the season, one more win for the Waves would eclipse the team's total from all of last year.
Thursday: at Brigham Young (Provo, Utah), 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT
Just two weeks ago, the men's basketball team opened WCC play with victories against both BYU and San Diego. The schools will already finish their season series during week three of conference play as the Waves continue their four-game road stretch. Brendan Lane earned College Sports Madness' Player of the Week award after averaging 19.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks last weekend. Pepperdine reached the 10-win mark in just 15 games, the quickest since 2004-05.
Friday: vs. UC Irvine (Firestone Fieldhouse), 7 p.m.
After tuning up with four exhibitions, the #6-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team gets the 2014 season officially underway this Friday against UC Irvine (3-1) inside Firestone Fieldhouse. The Anteaters, entering the season as the two-time defending NCAA champions, were ranked #1 in the preseason AVCA coaches poll and enter Friday's match now listed at #3. The Waves' opening weekend continues on Saturday, when the Blue and Orange host UC San Diego (0-1). Pepperdine returns five starters plus the libero from last year, including AVCA All-American setter Matt West and All-MPSF outside hitter Josh Taylor. Parker Kalmbach, an All-MPSF honorable mention as a middle blocker last season, has moved over to the right side, while senior Kyle Gerrans is expected to resume his role as outside hitter after injury cut his junior season short in 2013.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
Wednesday: at Loyola Marymount Invitational (Burns Aquatic Center)
With just one day of practice under their belts following the holiday break, the Waves won the Chris Knorr Invitational at Cal Lutheran over the weekend. Pepperdine will look to continue its New Year success this Wednesday when the team travels to nearby Loyola Marymount to battle both the Lions and Alaska Fairbanks. The Waves won eight total events on Saturday at the Chris Knorr Invitational, led by sophomore Jessica Mosbaugh with three race victories. Allison Naasz, Ally Bernard and Sydney Newman also earned first-place finishes, while both the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays teams emerged as winners.
