BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Pepperdine freshman Lisa McCloskey won the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout by one stroke on Wednesday, and thanks to three rounds of flawless golf, she set a collegiate record with a 17-under 199 for the tournament.
The effort by McCloskey helped the Waves to a first-place team finish with an incredible 41-under 823, by far a school-record score. Pepperdine, ranked #19 by Golfstat, finished 12 strokes ahead of #5 Oklahoma State. The tournament was held at the par-72 Boulder Creek Golf Club and was hosted by UNLV.
McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery HS) shot a 67-65-67 for her record score, which beat the 16-under 200 recorded by Pepperdine’s Katherine Hull at the 2003 San Jose State Spartan Invitational. While the NCAA does not keep official golf records, Golfstat research has not turned up a lower 54-hole score and previously considered Hull’s score to be the NCAA record.
McCloskey did not suffer a single bogey in her 54 holes and had 15 birdies and one eagle. Her final birdie, which came on the 16th hole, gave McCloskey a 5-under 67 today and a one-stroke victory over Therese Koelbaek of UNLV and Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville.
The Waves began the day with a 12-stroke lead in the tournament, and the margin didn’t diminish at all after a 15-under 273. Pepperdine shot 280-270-273, with all three rounds ranking among the top five in school history. Tuesday’s 18-under 270 is the school record, while today’s 273 ranks second-best.
“It’s just amazing,” Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. “The conditions were perfect, the course was in great shape, and although it was scoreable, you still have to be able to put the ball in the hole. The main thing for Lisa was the experience. She was playing great, she went in with a lead, she had to back it up, and she did it. That experience goes for everybody on the team. I wish we had a few more fall tournaments.”
The previous Pepperdine record for a team tournament score was an 18-under 846 at the 2003 San Jose State Spartan Invitational, so the Waves smashed that record by 23 strokes.
In addition to McCloskey, who won her first collegiate title in her third tournament, three other Waves finished in the top 10: senior Jayvie Agojo (Bangkal, Philippines) was sixth, sophomore Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) tied for seventh and freshman Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) tied for ninth.
Agojo nearly duplicated McCloskey’s feat of going the entire tournament without a bogey. She finished with an even-par 72 on Wednesday, giving her a total of an 8-under 208 (71-65-72). She had a total of nine birdies during the tournament and recorded her only bogey on the back nine today.
Karle ended the tournament with a 6-under 66, moving her up 11 spaces on the leaderboard. She finished with a 7-under 209 (73-70-66).
Drolson shot a 1-under 71 today for her third straight sub-par round, giving her a 6-under 210 for the tournament (69-70-71).
Freshman Jessica Wallace (Langley, B.C./Walnut Grove Secondary), playing as an individual, tied for 51st place at 220 (74-70-76). Freshman Kiara Hayashida (Lima, Peru/Heritage Academy) tied for 57th place at 221 (77-75-69).
Pepperdine’s record book was completely rewritten by this tournament, including:
-- school-record scores for 36 holes (26-under 250) and 54 holes (41-under 823);
-- the #1 (18-under 270), #2 (15-under 273) and #5 (8-under 280) single team rounds in school history;
-- McCloskey setting school records for 36 holes (12-under 132) and 54 holes (17-under 199);
-- the #4 (tied) 54-hole individual score (Agojo’s 8-under 208);
-- the #11 54-hole individual score (Karle’s 7-under 209);
-- the #12 (tied) 54-hole individual score (Drolson’s 6-under 208);
-- the #3 (tied) individual round in school history (7-under 65s by McCloskey and Agojo);
-- the #6 (tied) individual round in school history (6-under 66 by Karle);
-- and the #12 (tied) individual round in school history (a pair of 5-under 67s by McCloskey).
The Waves ended their fall season on a high note, as this was the third of their three tournaments. Pepperdine begins the spring season at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Feb. 9-11.
