Midland, Texas - Playing for the first time as a team, Pepperdine's Alex Llompart and Finn Tearney captured the men's doubles crown at the 2009 Midland Invitational on Sunday.

"They played very aggressive and well beyond their years," said Pepperdine Assistant Coach Nick Carless. "You would have thought they've been playing together for years."

Llompart/Finn defeated Josh Zavala/Vasko Mladenov (U of Texas) 9-8 (8-6) in the semifinals on Saturday evening to advance to Sunday's finals. The sophomore and freshman duo defeated Andre Daescu/Ionut Beleleu (U of Oklahoma) 8-6, in the finals.

Sophomore Andrea Oates won the women's singles consolation draw after advancing from the semifinals earlier in the day. Teammate Alexandria Walters fell to the tournament's No 1 seed Jelena Stanivicik in the semifinals, 6-1, 7-5.

"It was a good last day," said assistant coach Scott Doerner. "I saw lots of positive energy and a good start to the season.

Next up, the Waves men compete in the Wave Invitational (Sept. 25-27) at the Ralphs-Strauss Tennis Pavilion. The women compete at the All-American Tournament (Oct. 3-5) in Los Angeles, Calif.
